The Plant Care Guide for Indian Homes

Everything you need to know about sunlight exposure, watering schedules, potting soils, and repotting in tropical and subtropical Indian climates.

1. The Golden Rule of Watering

In India, over-watering is the #1 cause of houseplant demise! Indoor plants do not need daily drowning. Instead, use the Finger Knuckle Test: insert your index finger 1 to 2 inches into the soil. If it comes out cool and damp with soil clinging to it, wait another 2โ€“3 days. If it feels bone dry, water thoroughly until water trickles from the pot's bottom drainage holes.

๐Ÿ’ก Summer vs Monsoon: During peak Indian summers (Aprilโ€“June), plants transpire quickly and need water every 2โ€“4 days. During Monsoons and Winters, cut watering down to once every 7โ€“10 days.

2. Understanding Sunlight Indoors

Direct Indian sunlight through unshaded south/west windows can scorch tender foliage like Monstera, Peace Lilies, and Ferns.

Low Light

Corners 6โ€“10 feet from windows. Ideal for Snake Plants, ZZ Plants, and Aglaonema.

Bright Indirect

Well-lit rooms near sheer curtains. Ideal for Monstera, Fiddle Leaf Fig, Pothos, and Palms.

Full Direct Sun

Sunny balconies and terraces (5+ hrs). Ideal for Desi Roses, Hibiscus, Tulsi, and Lemon trees.

3. The Ultimate Potting Soil Recipe

Heavy garden clay ("chikni mitti") suffocates houseplant roots in pots. A porous potting mix allows air and water to circulate freely:

  • 40% Washed Cocopeat โ€” Retains essential moisture without turning muddy.
  • 30% Organic Vermicompost โ€” Sustained release of nitrogen, potassium, and beneficial microbes.
  • 15% Horticultural Perlite โ€” Prevents soil compaction and ensures rapid drainage.
  • 10% Neem Khali (Neem Cake Powder) โ€” Natural repellent against root nematodes and white grubs.
  • 5% River Sand / Bio-char โ€” Provides physical structure.
